Lin Jingyun’s practice is grounded in, as well as contextualized by, the knowledge and tradition of Chinese painting. Lin approaches painting with a formal expression that, without clinging onto the style of the ancient, attempts to elevate and sublate the language and essence of the classical Chinese painting. Conceptually, her work rediscovers and reconstructs the relationship between the zeitgeist of the classical era and the individual experiences of today. Evoking the vernacular storytelling genre of huaben, Lin’s paintings reimagine themes and subjects rawn from the everyday life. Following the distinct compositional order of Chinese painting, Lin renders the figures, objects, and stories with colors and textures also unique to the traditional art form. Rich and xpressive, her characters reveal the sophisticated desires and emotions of contemporary ife, set against backdrops whose rhythm echo the growth of life. Her contemplation on the ordinary does not seek to generate superficial wonders, but rather manifest itself in nuance, eloquently narrated through her expansive imagination.

Lin Jingyun was born in Changchun, China in 1990 and now lives and works in Beijing. She received her bachelor from School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2014 and master degree in 2019.
