Liu Xinyi is interested in unfolding various kinds of agencies that unintentionally played their roles in the history of political participation. A part of his work taps into widely circulated ideological idioms and symbols. By re-contextualizing the political landscape from the digital public domain into everyday life, Liu aims to trace the restless interchange between an individual and the contemporary world. Accompanied by continuous displacement of the worksite, another part of Liu’s practice investigates the social space under modern municipal governance, translating certain social situations and technological practices that may have contributed to the shaping of the artist’s own cultural psychology. Liu regards the spontaneous inspections as a long-term approach for capturing the representations of modernity overlapped and disrupted in the history of information networks and material realities, and for imagining the potentials of the invalid, the defective, and the non-retroactive in the information society characterized by increasing instrumentalization.
